When I burn or rip a disk, it gets about 10% done, then the drive completely disappears. It disappears in my computer and in device manager, and doesn't get detected until the computer is restarted. The BIOS detects the drives fine.
The drive is a Samsung sh-s202j, along with a Samsung sh-s222a, and both drives disappear. The s202j is the master drive, and s222a is set as slave.
The computer is running Windows 7 Professional x64, and the motherboard is an Intel DG35EC. The drives are plugged into the IDE port.

Solution
since they are both writer i would unplug the slave one first and see what happens also the 222a have a firmware update in 2010 and support up to vista so you may need to use vista driver .

Try re-installing the Intel chipset drivers.

EDIT: Do you have IDE Mode enabled in the BIOS?

I accidentally pressed the wrong button in the email :/ (I didn't actually mean to select that as best answer)
I've tried reinstalling the chipset drivers, but it doesn't actually help. I'll try to remove the slave drive and see if it fixes this.
IDE mode is enabled in the BIOS.

I removed the slave drive (sh-222a), and changed the ribbon cable, and the drive now works properly - I can rip/copy a disk and the drive won't disappear. I'm not sure whether it was a faulty ribbon cable or the slave drive causing it.
I also have another machine which wasn't detecting the dvd drive, and that turned out to be a faulty ribbon cable.
