My current set up is as follows-
Asus z77 mobo
I7-2700k @ 4.8
Sapphire 7970 vapor x 3gb model
Windows 8.1
Corsair vengeance 1600mhz 8gig RAM

I've read a wealth of posts comparing the two cards which I have in my sights as an upgrade, namely the r9 290 and the r9 290x. I use a 1080p monitor at 144hz, 120hz with lightboost and have NO intention of running more than one monitor for gaming in the near future. I primarily play BF4 and arma 2.
What I really want to know from individuals with experience in the matter, is it justifiably worth getting the 290x over the 290 just for the few fps to try to keep my games stable at at least 120fps with me not intending to run high resolution or would it just be better to get the 290 for more and crossfire if the need ever presents itself. I have the current budget for either but that doesn't mean I have to spend the extra $100 if there's no real discernable advantage. I was looking at the asus ocII models which sell for 500 and 600 respectively, but I read that this cooler in particular does not have safe vrm temperatures even though the price is right. Thank you in advance

Yes it's more than capable of running them with a certain degree of comfort but with lightboost it really works so much better if you keep games at a constant frame frequency, 120 for my application. I'm helping out a friend and selling my card to him for only $100 so looking for something a bit better. Just looking for the best overall around my budget (600 +/-), and I've never had any bad experiences with amd so looking towards the r9 series. Nothing against nvidia at all though, just never had a card made by them

Why not CrossFire with another HD 7970? It'll double the performance and the FPS as well.. So if you we getting 60FPS stable you'll now get around 120FPS stable..
If you're still interested in getting rid of your HD 7970, Go for NVIDIA GTX 780.. GeForce GTX 780 looks a lot more attractive with the R9 290 selling at $550 (while GTX 780 for 500$). It's simply cooler, quieter, and better-built. Plus, it gives you G-Sync capability, if that upcoming technology is catching your eye. And if your interested in the ultimate gaming experience, save some extra bucks and go for GTX 780 TI.. It is the fastest single-GPU graphics card available in the market. and being sold at 699$ on Amazon.
