hi, i have a situation on my windows 8 laptop. I have followed all the prompts to reset my PC, and it has been stuck on 1 percent for a while now, and im a little unsure if anything is happening. I also have been reading around the site for any answers, and i see many ppl are being asked for a media disc...i have no idea where my disc is, or even if the laptop came with one...I am used to the windows 7 OS, and this windows 8 is very frustrating. Its completely different than any other windows OS system that i have ever used. I dont know if i am on the right track with this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The disc is a copy of the OS backup partition on your laptop (that's why computers don't ship with a disc anymore). Sadly, creating one is usually a pre-emptive thing, before there's a problem.

If you've successfully found the reset on your computer that requires this media, and it's broken, making a disc won't help any. You'll have to contact the manufacturer and order a set of discs.

THAT SAID. Did you stumble into the Windows 8 reset in the general area of the settings? If you selected the Reset and wipe everything, it passes over your drive to ensure it's wiped and the information is not retrievable, at which point it will restore your computer to factory defaults. That one can take a long time.

I would be more helpful, but I'm going off of what I see at my place of work. I'm still running 7 on my home PC since I didn't see the point in upgrading to 8. I should mention, just be patient. Try giving it 24 hours; if nothing has happened by then you can be fairly certain something is borked.

Thanks for the advice, I will try waiting a day. Yes, I went to the wipe out completely option...i read that it would take much longer, but like i said, im used to windows 7, and it never took that long. Thanks for the tip on the discs, I didnt know i could order them. Thanks again!

The reason being is 7 never offered the option. The complete wipe and restore means the OS is busy overwriting your ENTIRE hard drive with random bits of data. From our wipe procedures we do where I work, it usually takes 8 hours at a minimum.

As for the discs, a small mistake. You can order recovery media usually, that's true, but why not make your own? It's far cheaper.
All you need:
32GB USB stick (2.0 or 3.0, doesn't matter)
Search --> Create Recovery Media (or try Drive)

It'll offer you the option to back that up onto a USB stick if you need it in future. I strongly recommend doing it - if something goes bad, it means you only have to pay for a Hard drive, not the discs/ new OS.

I can't recall if I'm confusing 8 or 8.1 here, but I think they both have the option.

Thanks again for your help. As it turned out, it took about 4 hours, not including the time it took to set it all up again. And it never asked for the media disc, but i think i will take your advice and make one just in case!
