i have an XPS-8000 i5-750 the specs say

PCI express

Gen2 x1 slot bi-directional speed — 500 MB/s
Gen2 x16 slot bi-directional speed — 16 GB/s

Can I use a PCI express 2.1 x16 video card?
Actually what are the limits on cards i can use? Mar 26, 2014

Solution
You can use any PCI-E graphics card you want. The question is what will give you the most bang for the least bucks. A PCI-E 2.1 x16 card will work in the x16 slot at PCE-E 2 speeds, giving you that huge total bandwidth.

2.1 is the same speed as 2.0. It just includes some of the new commands that were planned for 3.0 at the time.

You can run any card on any ver of pci-e slot. Although there are some cards I don't remember which cannot run. What card are you tring to run? There will be a very discrete to slight performance decrease but you should be able to do your work.

I am looking to buy a card for my Dell. It looks like the biggest limitation is going to be the psu.

well it's a 8000 but i think it is still a standard size. It's kind of an old box and I don't want to put a lot of money into it. I seem to be experiencing a problem that I think is video related. After an OS update it started crashing once a day. I just did a clean install and so far no crashes.

I'd like to just get a new computer!
