Is Aero necessary for windows 7?

Just a thought, I have a laptop that I want to upgrade to windows 7 and the specs are pretty low. It meets most of the requirements right now and I do need to make a few changes. But the graphics does not support Aero if I upgrade.

Laptop Specs:

Model: Vaio VGN-640/w
CPU: 1.6 GHz Pentium M 730
Graphics: 910GML Express Chipset (doesn't support Aero)
RAM: 504 MB (Will upgrade to 1 GB before installing)
HDD: 70 GB ( will probably upgrade to 250 GB before upgrade as well)

I just want to know if Windows 7 will run without it. The laptop is about 1 step from a garbage disposal, the only thing I need it for is networking over at the university I attend. With Windows 7 I can install the programs I need, and as long as I don't need Aero Windows 7 should still work.
