OK so i receive this computer a Compaq presario sr1429uk today and when i plug it in the wall it immediately powers on, Weird, it wasn't displaying anything on monitor either then i did all sorts eg reset cmos, reseating cpu, etc and reseating graphics card, BTW the PC has no on board graphics so have to use dedicated gpu. eventually when i held the power button for 10 seconds it turned off. so as an experiment i switched it off at the wall. then when i switched it back on at the wall it didnt automatically power on again, good one problem solved. now it still doesn't display. also no beep codes aswell.

could you tell me if it means i need to replace the motherboard or anything else.

many thanks

I plugged it into the gpu first then when it didn't work I removed it to see if it would work on the integrated graphics which didn't work since even though there was VGA port on the motherboard, there isn't any onboard graphics.

Alright well it could be a couple of issues. The most likely its the VGA or DVI you are using try finding a different one to use. Also it could be the Graphics card. Also did the monitor work before or is it brand new?

Well the hard drive is what boots everything unless you boot off your motherboard try putting in the Hard drive and turn it on again. If that doesnt work try pressing escape or F8 this should boot to motherboard if it doesnt work it may be a faulty mother board.

Also not sure if it will help aswell but the previous owner took out his hard drive and the pc has started to start automatically again, couldn't it be a bios issue eg if the previous owner set the pc to resume when it gets power but it can't resume because there's no hardrive to boot off. Or is the motherboard just dead.

I've just read up on a problem like this and we'll the guy said his faulty psu killed his motherboard, could it be the same story with this since mine is showing the same symptoms eg powering on as soon as I plug in power. Btw it's a bestec psu

Thanks guys for all your answers but I took out one the ram sticks and the pc posted and I have installed Ubuntu only other problem is that it still boots up by itself. I have replaced the power supply and the motherboard seems to be fine. However as someone said couldn't an old CMOS battery cause these automatic start ups. So should I replace it and will these make the pc boot up as normal.
