o00pcsm :
can any one explain to me in simple terms what a controller really is in computers
in a very easy way to understand thank you
"controller" can refer to several different things.
Basically it is a chip that in some way manages or "controls" different subsystems.
This can mean everything from graphics, sound, networking, storage, etc...
Most commonly it's used referring to the SATA controller that handles communication with your hard drives and other devices in your system.
A computer motherboard can have more than one of these with different features.
So you can have a motherboard with a basic Intel SATA controller that you can plug 6-8 drives into and a Marvell controller that you can plug in 2 more drives into with different features and performance.
Of course 'controller' can refer to the chip(s) on hard drives, SSD's, etc... too.
Also, the same or similar controller chips can be put on separate cards that plug into the motherboard that do a lot of different things.
