Hi people of the Toms Hardware Community! I am new to the forums and looking to build my first pc on my own.

I edit videos a lot but I play games such as BF4 and all those types of games. But now looking to upgrade my ride to something a bit more luxurious.

The following parts were recommended by my 50 year old Dad who is a bit of a computer nerd.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/3gxFU

Just need an experts opinion (not saying my dad isn't an expert) but need help on compatibility and any recommendations.

Smaller the computer the better and also quietness is a must. I have added a large monitor as I need this, but the other peripherals I already have.

Oh 3K aussie dollars is about what I am looking at budget wise. :)

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($88.00 @ CPL Online)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($305.00 @ CPL Online)

Your dad knows what he's doing! This is an excellent build. I just have a couple tweaks that could make it slightly less expensive.
- That cooler is kinda expensive for an air-cooled version. You can get an H100i for about the same price and that should give you better performance. Or get a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo which should still give you great performance for a much cheaper price (around $30).
- 16GB isn't completely necessary, 8gb would probably work, given that you don't have a ton of windows open at once.
- This is the exact same GPU for $150 cheaper from newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130916
- Windows 7 is starting to get dated, I recommend windows 8. If you don't like the new start screen...

G'day zehp and thanks for the quick reply! Glad to hear the old man knows what he is talking about, thanks for that.

- Less expensive is always better ha
- The GPU on newegg.com is heaps cheaper, but only bad thing is newegg dont ship internationally (I am in Australia :) )
- As I like to play my games on the ultra setting, do you think its worth me overclocking? I am not that confident with overclocking.
- Should I go with the 8gb now and see if I need more in the future?

Great build, would suggest faster DRAM if in the budget, 1866/9 is often priced about the same as 1600/9 and Haswell likes fast DRAM:

The 212 EVO is a great cooler choice, mentioned by Zeph_yr, I ran one on my Hero (in sig) while waiting for the GTS V8 to be released, the EVO was fine at 4.4 24/7 and fine at 4.5 for like day use, temps started creeping at 4.5 after long use

No problem at all. I forgot they didn't ship to Australia, sorry!

Personally, I don't like overclocking, it shortens your components' lifetimes and doesn't give you much extra performance in return. If you haven't done it before, I wouldn't attempt it on your brand new computer. If you decide not to, you could save a good $200-300.

What programs and games do you use? What's your regular usage scenario?

Hey Tradie, I will keep that in mind for when I do my revised build :)

Zeph, all good! It would be cheaper if I could buy off newegg ha Thanks for the advice, I might steer clear of overclocking since its my first build.

Which bits should I change if I am not going to overclock guys?

I use Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate for video editing (Heavy use), Photoshop (I use occasionally), do a bit of audio editing as well... Games I play all the lastest FPS games pretty much, just about to get Titanfall.

Oh I do some of my office work but dont need to worry about that!

I'd stay as is, may not want to OC now, but having the option open can come in handy unless you are only planning this for a year or so...and the 4770K is easy to OC (especially with the Hero), can go to 4 GHz just by changing the multiplier to 40, the Hero also has built in presets in the BIOS if you want to use it (4.2, 4.4, 4.6)...also comes w/ AI Suite which has OCing options in it if you favor software OCing
