I'm going to university this coming fall and I was wondering that because I'm going to live in dorms and going home during the winter breaks, is it bad that I'm unplugging my desktop to drive 5 hours home and then unplug again 5 hours back to the university? Basically if I shut it down first is that ok? Will unplugging it completely harm my computer? I have no other choice but to do that if I wana keep it in my dorm.

Just make sure you do the sutdown first and then wait for it to power down. Then it's OK to unplug it for however long you need.

Just be aware that desktop machine are not ruggedized like laptops so they typically don't survive being dropped. It might survive being dropped but it's more likely to be damaged. If you have the box and foam liners that it came in it's best to put it in that to move it.

The only problem you might have is losing your clock time. That will depend on how old the motherboard backup BIOS battery is. If that does happem just install a new BIOS battery and you'll be good to go for another few years.

It will not harm your computer as long as you turn off the computer off first, then unplug the power cord connected to the PSU. The unplugging isn't harming any components, unless you do it while it is turned on which could short circuit/fry components.

Basically just don't unplug the computer before turning it completely off and you will be fine.

The motherboard will have a small round battery (like a watch battery) somewhere on it. If that goes dead your motherboard will lose its configuration memory (any custom BIOS settings will reset to default) and will be unable to keep time (so when you start your system up it may show the wrong time and date). No harm can come to any of your components because of this, but if it happens you'll want to replace the battery as soon as possible. However, given that your system is so new that is very unlikely to happen. I've never had a motherboard battery drain before the motherboard itself got old enough to warrant replacing.
