I'm thinking of selling my xbox one and just upgrading my pc. I have a quad core amd fx 4170 (4.2ghz) with a gtx 680. motherboard is ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS, what exactly would i need to run bf4 or cod ghosts or titanfall on ultra with limited to no lag..

Look again, there is an issue, and it's with the processor:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/battlefield-4-graphics-card-performance,review-32798-10.html

"There's a noticeable speed-up going from FX-4170 at 4.2 GHz to the FX-8350 at 4 GHz.... Battlefield 4 does get some utility from a six- or eight-core CPU that you don't see from a quad-core chip."

"The [FX4170] certainly encounter spikes in frame time latency [at] the Ultra preset."

I appreciate it. I think i shall order that new processor today. and to whomever asked how much ram i have, i have 12gb i installed myself. One question.. i've never actually installed a processor. What kind of things could i do wrong that would screw it up

Good post above by Kevin. Some additional notes:

You don't need to spread the thermal compound around the top of the CPU, don't use a piece of plastic, or anything at all. The pressure of the heatsink down onto the cpu will spread the compound out for you. I literally just stick a small dollop of compound onto the middle of the chip and let physics do the rest.

You need less thermal compound than you think. Less is better. If you add loads it will act as an insulator.

i'm just barely getting the processor because i was doing extensive research on which processor to buy, i finally managed to get the amd fx 8350 and an equvalent mobo. I have yet to connect the processor to motherboard as i'm recieving it tomorrow and am nervous as hell LOL but i appreciate all the great answers and support. this is a great community.

Download coretemp. It will tell you what speed your CPU is running at, from that you'll be able to tell if it's running at full speed, or throttling: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Also try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2645594

my friend did a pc inspection since he's a wiz. got me a program called speccy which i actually like more than core temp. but thanks for the info! He basically said my computer is fine and tweaked it a bit. now i'm wondering if any problems be related to my ram only saying 667 mhz? as well as my monitor is actually my 2 year old vizio 47" 60hrz TV.

my tv is litereally the only one i've ever truly loved at gaming. I primarily used it for my xbox 360, then xbox one and NEVER had a lag issue or screen tearing issue. Its always at 100fps to 130fps on my frames per second monitoring, of course i'm guessing the reason is xbox 360 never displayed at even 60 fps most times, but the tv i have is the 47" vizio E series. 6.5 ms, 1920 x 1080, best custom game mode setting i've ever used. so, if the tv was 120 it'd probably work just as well as the monitor? cuz there is only one reasonably priced monitor i've found with 144hrz refresh. its an asus.

hdmi. always btw lol I only used dvi to hdmi at one point because my card only had that at the time, since the gtx 650ti and 680 i've had, i only use hdmi with the recommended resolution of 1920 x 1080

oh god i hate those tv's lol, soap box looking shit, I really like the asus one, but people said the colors and stuff aren't very good looking since it's mostly for games. i can't afford the 440$ benq one which i thought was a crappy brand...? but i have no idea. only real monitor i had was a viewsonic 24" which was good looking, but only 60hrz as well

I completely re-installed windows 7 after i got my new mobo and processor. nothings left of my old drivers. Thanks, but i just ordered a new gtx 770 with 4gb so even if it's involved with that at all it should run it better. Thanks tho :)
