trying to update to win 7 from xp. dell and the microsoft check both say my system will take win7. when booting from the wi 7 disk it loads then goes to a black screen that says windows loading and stops there. so i re-installed my operating sys back with a image copy and updated , started windows xp and went to the win 7 disk and installed it. it installed ok but get caught at the same screen, but now i can choose to start my computer with the old windows or new so i can try different things to get 7 to work. i have a nivida gforce 6800 video card and updated the driver to the latest for xp
My question is there is a different driver update for the win 7 platform . ive downloaded and saved it. if i try to install it and then try to boot up with win 7 and the update didnt make it work, will i be able to reboot and see xp. thank you fred

Which operating system was on first? Is your bios set to AHCI or IDE mode? It can be made where both will boot either way, but if XP was on and 7 won't start, it's likely that it's in IDE mode. Switch it to AHCI mode, and try to install 7 that way. You may have to install AHCI drivers, and then switch it for XP to work without switching back to IDE mode every time.
