So I recently bought this laptop, and performance was pretty good, but I want to take it a bit higher. Could anyone recommend a base I should start with, or some tips/info?

Some of my specs are(sorry, i'm really bad at this):
Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40 Ghz (8 CPUs) ~2.4 Ghz
Memory: 16 GB
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M

Solution
Overclocking laptops is dangerous. They're only meant to handle a certain amount of heat. You run the risk of damaging your computer. I know that personally I would never even attempt it.

A cooling pad would only give you a marginal difference. Not worth it. As for the performance issue, a laptop is considerably more restricted in what you can do compared to a PC. If you absolutely need more performance. Try something like Gamebooster. I think it's junk, but some people like it because it supposedly boosts fps by shutting down background processes.

Thanks for the reply. Ok, so if I were to play some higher end games like bf4, could I get 30+ fps?

Only if you play at low or maybe medium quality.
