Windows Update Hosed Graphics: Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M

Somehow Windows update managed to push some sort of Nvidia software. I typically do not let Windows Update handle any vendor specific updates. However, last night in my lack of vigilance, I just let the laptop reboot when it said it had installed updates rather than checking them first.

Now, in the device manager, there is no graphics card listed. I've gotten the proper drivers from Nvidia, however, the installation fails because some crucial part of Windows isn't acknowledging the card. dxdiag DOES show the actual card.

Upon trying to go into the BIOS and see what I might discover there, I have been met with an unhelpful Dell screen that doesn't allow me to change anything.

I am reasonably hardware and software savvy, but I am pretty old school in my knowledge. I'll spare you the "back in the day" stories if you happen to have some advice on how to potentially roll back this nonsense and put me back where I was.

Sincerest gratitude.

i would try cleaning the system of ALL nvidia drivers/software (google 'nvidia remover' i think) and then reboot, and see if your card shows up like normal, then try to install the correct drivers.

Thank you for your reply. Alas, this did not work. I did get a cleaner program to make sure anything Nvidia was removed and I double-checked the installed programs list for anything else left. I then tried to reinstall the drivers and the installation failed. Checking device manager, I still see nothing remotely resembling a graphics card in the list.

where are you getting the drivers for the card you are installing? Sometimes the Laptops have 2 video chips, one intel for regular Desktop, and one higher power one for gaming and other graphics intensive things, the drivers for this setup usually are specially made from the manufacturer (Dell) and those are the ones that need to be installed, and in this case, ESPECIALLY keep windows update from messing with them.
