Cds vs DVDS

I am on Windows8.1. My dvd drive is recognized in File Explore and Disk Management. I can read and write CDs on this drive but it will not recognize a DVD for any read or write functions. I have done most of the recommended fixes like removing the upper and lower filters in the registry, changing the Atapi controller data entry to 00000001 but none of these work. What else can I do? Most people read this issue and think it means the PC does not recognize the drive itself but that is not the problem; it recognized it just fine; it just will not recognize a blank dvd or one with data on it.

Solution
Hi

either the dvd laser has failed but the CD laser is still working or the registry is badly corrupted

Find a Bootable DVD such as Win 7, 8 or 8.1 & and try to boot up off this DVD
If you cant boot up from a DVD this confirms hardware fault with drive

DVD drives are very cheap nowdays so easy to replace (assuming desktop PC with full height drive)
