I need to get a laptop for collage/school use for my brother whose laptop just went out. The budget is $500 and pretty much the only requirements are good battery life and I'd prefer not to get Acer due to a couple bad experiences before. He doesnt care about touch screen or ssd and doesn't need a ton of storage. So like I said just basic stuff like writing papers and then some Sony Vegas to edit stop motion videos. He's used an i5 3317u and it was plenty for him

Thanks for any help

Plenty of options at the stores. Best time would be the either Summer Sale because the kids want laptops / etc. for the summer or wait till near end of Summer for the Return to school sales. Anytime you can get a laptop for under $500, but for a i5 you will have to shop alot. Also FYI they DO NOT include a video card but onboard video, so video editing maynot be a option. If you want one with a dedicated graphics card your going to have to spend alot more, because that is extra cost to develop and isnt' what the 90% of others need out there.

Yeah I know I can't get a dedicated card for that price. The only reason I mentioned an i5 3317u is that is what he used before and was happy with the performance. There was no dedicated card in it just the integrated hd4000. I would love to wait till summer to get it but seeing as he needs a PC right now we will be buying it in the next few days. Also the $500 is a bit flexible $600 is the true absolute most but whenever people give a budget on this forum it gets broken by at least a little haha

Through my own research I came up with this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312829

Thoughts on it? I'm not too knowledgeable with laptops since I don't like them in the first place so any suggestions would be appreciated

EWWW on APUs. APUs are for the other 90% of computers out there needing low power, low cost, low demands (i.e. grandma checking facebook), and certainly is viable if all you need is something in that class of work. As you mentioned something more demanding (Sony Vegas) and your previous experiance was a i5, then you be very frustrated and unhappy with a APU. Best to stick with close / near what your used to. Nothing is special about the laptops except what you want extra in them (SSD vs HDD, super paper thin or normal thickness, with video card or okay with onboard, etc.). As I said shop around, you know you want to stick with i5, but you may need to bump down to i3 to meet your cost goals.

I saw that lenovo but the reviews aren't too good on amazon.
Just googled it and it seems that it is good just with the low review numbers it made it look worse. It is definitely a good option

I was also looking at this dell it has an i3 but it is cheaper and I think it'd be powerful enough:

I will definitely recommend the lenevo g510 to my brother though as it seems to be just what I think he wants
