Surge, no display + case fans dead.

Have you used the "self test" button that is located on your PSU? This could possibly rule out a problem with the motherboard and indicate that the PSU was to blame. I am a HUGE Corsair fan and own an AX860i, myself. I would HATE to think that there would be a problem with the PSU, but you can't entirely rule it out. :(

There doesn't seem to be a button on it. I checked the manual as well, and there's no mention of a self test. Perhaps this series doesn't come with one?

Edit: When opening up my case I could smell burning, upon sniffing around the smell is coming from the motherboard... so I guess that's my motherboard doomed then.

Something is definitely not right. I would HIGHLY advise that you not operate the computer again without first figuring out what is wrong. It is very possible and even likely that if there were a problem with the PSU that you can destroy system components. It is very rare that I suggest this, but if you aren't very educated and comfortable in your ability in diagnosing hardware issues, I would take your computer to a repair shop. There they have the proper equipment and knowledge to accurately diagnose the problem and offer you the solution to fix this problem. Further operating your computer in it's current condition can cause even more damage to occur. I'm not saying that this is a definite, but it is only responsible to let you know that the risk does exist.
