Setting up 2 monitors

I will be setting up 2 monitors on my system. I currently have one, and just placed the order for the 2nd from Newegg.

I won't be using dual monitor gaming. I do video editing, and would like my "preview" on a second monitor. I also do a lot of graphics work, CAD work, and computer programming. I might load up a game to play once a week or so and only for an hour or so. Gaming is definitely not why I'm getting an additional monitor, or I'd have to have 3.

I'd like, however, best possible response from the game when in full screen on one monitor, and still be able to have something displayed at proper resolution on the other monitor. I have an ASUS Radeon HD 7770 card, and will hook up the newer Viewsonic 1920x1080 monitor to it. I was considering hooking up my existing monitor (1680x1050 resolution) to my A10-6800K iGPU, as I was thinking this would be good enough display for the applications I run. I only picked up the HD 7770 for better casual gaming and a bit faster rendering of videos.

I know you can't do Dual Graphics with the 7770 and the A10, but they can both work side-by-side simultaneously, when running different monitors. At least that's my understanding. I know I have them both enabled right now, because my video rendering using openCL takes advantage of both and I get better rendering time when it uses both instead of just the 7770.

Okay, lot of hot air just to ask with what I'm wanting to do, would it be better to hook both monitors to the 7770? Or go ahead and put one on 7770 and the other on the iGPU?

Solution
If you want best framerate out of games put your 2nd monitor on the iGPU as it wont be using the 7770 so that can be dedicated to whats on your main screen. In short, one on the 7770 and one on the iGPU

Ah, that's what I was thinking. Just never had to GPUs to do it with at the same time I had two monitors. I haven't had 2 monitors in a while now, and when I did, I only had a single dedicated GPU, with no iGPU or second GPU.

That's great to know.

One other quick question... This isn't a very big deal for me, but it would be nice to be able to span a screen saver across both monitors. Can I do that with them hooked to GPU and iGPU separated like that? I suppose I can just test it when it gets here tomorrow.

Well, it's done, and I've been testing it out for the last couple of days now. I can tell zero difference in game performance with FPS using Fraps if the old monitor on the iGPU is disabled or enabled and in use.

I've only got one problem with my second monitor, though. It's made me realize that, while I thought I had a great 1st monitor, it just can't hold a candle to my new IPS 7ms 100% sRGB monitor. I've never seen such fabulous color accuracy on a monitor before in my life. Sure makes working on photography and video a lot easier now.

It was on sale, and I saved about $70 on it over regular price. Beat other sale prices by $30 or more, so I'm pleased with the deal. I went with this one because with the sale, it was only $20 more than a much lower quality monitor. Now I'm itching to save up and buy another one just like it, because the colors on my old monitor, while okay, just can't match up to a good quality IPS.

My gaming has changed. My video editing has changed. Everything is so much better. Wish I would have done this years ago. If I ever have to start over, I swear dual IPS monitors will be higher on the budget than extra memory.

Thanks again, eob2000, your solution has worked out to be perfect in practice. As far as the screen saver, no problem for it. I ended up picking up Windows 8.1, and tweaking it for desktop mode, and it flat out does better with multiple monitors than did 7, and it gets better frame rates on the same settings in Tomb Raider 2013. I went from 52 to 61 FPS Average, and from 38 to 47 minimum FPS. I thought I'd have thrown my computer out the Window by now with 8.1, but it really configures well once you get rid of the start screen and get a new start button program.
