OCing a 6300 and performance/price ratio vs. stock i5s

At first I thought about getting an 6300 and OC it since it was fairly cheap compared to the i5s. But when I think about it the price also goes up for OC since I need to buy a good motherboard and an aftermarket cooler for the CPU. So considering these the price was now nearly same with the i5s. I wonder would getting an i5 with a cheap mobo will be better for me since I never render anything or do anything with images and such, only gaming.

I will be getting m5a97 as mobo for the 6300. Can this mobo achieve good OC'ing? I want to know if my 6300 can compete and surpress the i5 performance when OC'ed. Or even an i5 like 3470 or 3570 will give better performance for me against even an OC'ed 6300?

Also do you think a 6300 with 270 or 7870 can run Rome 2 on ultra 1920x1080? I wonder if trying to cheapen out with AMD will actually cost me more than an i5 since I will be getting an expensiver mobo and fan. (man those noctuas are expensive...)

I want to get an i5 and a cheap motherboard (any cheap mobo recommendation for 3470 or 3570 that wouldn't decrease my performance is also welcome so I can compare the prices better) if the performance will be around the same or better than an even OC'ed 6300. USD is quite expensive nowadays in my country thanks to dumb politicians so budget is really killing me...

EXACTLY. This is what I have been saying for a while now. The AMDs aren't as cheap as they seem. It costs a lot of extra money to overclock them. I officially recommend the i3 4130 over the FX6300. I recommend the i5 4570 over any AMD at any price point. Any Haswell i5 is hands down WAY better than the FX6300 no matter how much it's overclocked.
