I recently built a new computer that has a 1 tb western digital hard drive in it. I already installed windows 8.1 64 bit on it. I have the hard drive that was in my old system, I want to plug it into my new system, transfer all of my old files onto the 1 tb drive then format it for future use. But when i plug the hard drive in it shows up in disk management buts its grey and tells me i have to format before i can use it. Can anyone help me

Don't format it. Use an external enclosure or a dock to connect it to the new system (via USB or eSATA).

No; you could give it to someone that does data recovery for a living. For a fee, they could pull all the data off the drive, then you can format it.
