Hey guys,

My computer has started to turn off randomly while idle.
I checked the PSU on its own (without load) and it ran fine for hours. I replaced the RAM with sticks i know to work and that didnt solve the problem. The Mobo doesnt have any signs of damage (no broken capicitors etc). I have also left the computer on the bios and it has still turned off which would indicate it isnt a windows problem. The GPU has also worked fine in a different computer.

The weird thing is that if i turn my computer on then play a game like League of Legends of Call of Duty than my system runs fine forever and will not turn off randomly at all afterwards, until i shut down my computer and turn it back on.

I have a feeling it might be the PSU as i dont know what else would cause the computer to turn off as if the power had just gone out. But why would my computer work fine after i play games?
Thanks,

System

I have the exact same problem and think its the PSU as well. After dealing and looking up on this issue for 3 1/2 weeks I finally think it would have to be a faulty PSU. Just ordered another one and going to check. My pc is fairly new as of late April and didn't have these issues for the first couple months.

Well got the new psu and for a day it has not turned off on me so good riddance I hope. Before it almost always would instant shut off on me after a cold boot at idle after 30sec to a min. For a couple of times now it has not done that and otherwise as well so I'm thinking I'm set with this new psu but has only been a day and will report back in a week then a month.

Yeah I hope he did. My old cx750m was decent as well. Rated I believe at 3rd tier but even the best can fail yup. I have to say though that the cx was actually quieter then this hx even with constant fan spin. The hx is quiet when fan doesn't spin but is loud for the initial part when it kicks in every time. The fan only operates when playing games though and stays quiet till then but I rather it operate constantly like the cx so I don't have to hear the fan kicking in every time it gets up to temps. It's kind of frustrating when they say that the hx is quiet and yet it has this obvious draw back. Why they implemented this feature I don't know but I thing its irrelevant and rather annoying. Other then that it looks and feels to be a good quality solid piece.

I'm wondering now if my cx fan didn't spin at enough rpm though to keep it cool therefore turning off PC rather then bad capacitors or something.....

My personal opinion but if you have a psu that's faulty or dying then shot for something a bit more expansive when replacing. Especially if you have higher end components with more power draw.

I had an Corsair CX750w (which is supposed to be a decent psu) that powered my 450w to 500w or so watts PC and was a surprisingly quiet psu (silent really even under load). Had no issues for the first 2 to 3 months after it decided to give up. However I heard its good to have your psu work at a 50 to 60% load for longevity. It puts less load on it.

I have a Corsair HX1050w (just under top off the line) now and while its a bit loud when the fan kicks in I can't help but think its working properly and flawlessly in that sense. Its dead silent when browsing and even with some less demanding games the fan don't require to spin.

However I can definitely see how this can be bothersome to some people as its not a really quiet psu under load.

I mainly play demanding games at night with headphones so its almost a non issue with me. Only when i get on iRacing during the day is when i can hear the fan kick in occasionally but quickly fades away through the engine and exhaust sound that my excellent tv speakers produce. :)

I've had the Corsair HX1050w for a year now and fortunately all is well and I'm happy with it. It's a heavy good quality psu. But I know that any PSU can fail no matter the tier...
