Hello everyone at Tom's Hardware! This is my first post here after signing up. I have of course often come here to get information/knowledge about various PC hardware.

As mentioned, I'm trying to put together a low budget gaming PC. various parts will be reused from my current PC. ( monitor, storage, keyboard, mouse etc etc.) So if you see something missing in the list of new hardware just assume I have it covered. :)

My main reason to come to all you PC hardware guru's here is that I would like to know more about the new AMD APU's 3D gaming performance.

Now for the Hardware:

http://

As you can see, there isn't many pieces in the list, because I have all the missing ones already which I can reuse.

I have read/browsed through several reviews/tests of the APU and how it works together with a Radeon 240/250 card. But none of the tests included the 2gb GDDR5 version which is on my list.
I'm aware the R7 250 isn't a top notch card at all, but its the best that can work together with the APU in dual graphics (to my knowledge).

1) As you can see I've put 2x R7 250 cards in the list for Crossfire. However, I don't know if dual graphics from the APU will work together with 2x R7 250 cards in crossfire... Or if the 2x R7 250 crossfire setup with override the dual graphics options completely. IF it does override then the purpose of the APU is gone and I will look into another build. Can someone please clarify/explain to me what is true?

2) Memory/RAM: If you look at the APU and Motherboard specs then you will see the APU supports 2133 mhz memory and the Motherboard 2400 mhz. My question, will I benefit from having 2400mhz memory or not? Or will my bios simply downgrade my memory to 2133mhz memory?

3) Crossfire: I have never tried Crossfire or SLI... Ever. I have read both good and bad about both setups. I am aware of the chance of micro stuttering in games when using Crossfire/SLI. What I would like to know is; Is it worth it in this build to do Crossfire due to the R7 250 in itself is a rather weak card?

I hope you all can help answering my questions!

P.S. I totally favor AMD CPU's and hope you will take this into consideration when you give advice.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($189.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock B85 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($79.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $659.95

This is a much better build. Going with an APU when you have discrete graphics is pointless.

Thank you for the quick reply woltej1, but what I'm seeking is replies to my questions and advice relative to them.
I suppose I should add to my post that I'm an AMD CPU person. :)

You say that using a discrete graphics card with an APU is pointless. But that is specifically why i chose the R7 250's those card can Dual Graphic with the APU. My questions is if that will still work if I use 2x R7 250 in Crossfire?

I dont believe using 2 r7 and your apu will qualify as technical 3 way crossfire. I believe the max that can be 'paired' with the apu is just one card. If you threw two cards in you could crossifre those together, but it wouldnt be tied into the apu at all.

Im also a amd guy, but even if you could tri crossfire you'd be severely bottlenecked by the processor part of that apu. Get a 6300 and a 750ti or something

I have contacted AMD and asked them if this APU can make a theoretical 3-way Crossfire with 2x Radeon 250 cards.

On AMD's own website it is mentioned that you can have maximum 4 GPU's together in Crossfire. I have not seen it mentioned anywhere that its not possible.

I will let you know about the response when i get it. But i guess it will take them a while to reply.

I got an answer from AMD

Hi xxxx,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[xxxxxxxxxx]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

I am sorry to say that 4 R7 250s can crossfire at the same time but you can not enable dual graphics and crossfire at the same time, which means 7850k cannot dual graphics with 2 R7 250s.

Thanks for supporting AMD!

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

AMD Global Customer Care

And since the Dual graphics only works with the standard R7 240 or 250(which in them selves aren't great cards) it makes the 7850K rather useless for gaming.

A 4-way Crossfire sounds neat but with R7-250's... not so sure about it. Naturally if I had to do a 4-way Crossfire my total video card budget would have to be split in 4 which limits the awesomeness of the cards available to me.

This new revelation ends this thread since ill give up on the A-series processors.

Thank you all for your responses and advices
