I'm slowly putting together my next build, and I know for sure that I want SLI cards capable of 120 or 144 fps, on max settings of coarse, and a 120 or 144 hz monitor to match. I hate DVI and was planning on using HDMI, but I just learned that HDMI is incapable of 1080p at 120 or 144hz, only the newest available standard, which isn't supported by most cards or monitors yet, so It's either dual link DVI or DisplayPort, I have no experience with displayport besides the fact that every card I've owned has had a displayport and I just brushed it off and always used HDMI. For those who have 120/144Hz setups do you use DVI or DP? If displayport is the right option should I wait until displayport 1.3 (scheduled to be released during Q2) or will a 1.2 cable make no difference? Any help will be appreciated!

There is no right or wrong decision. Both deliver the same experience, assuming the connection you want is available with the features you want.

If you want to game as 120-144hz, both support it.

If you want to use G-sync, then you'll need Displayport. If you want to use Eyefinity, then you need at least 1 displayport connection, otherwise it does not matter.

HDMI is perfectly fine too, but not for 120-144hz.

HDMI was developed for televisions, DP was developed for monitors and is supposed to supersede DVI.

I think you'll find DP enables features not supported by DVI, because it has support for ethernet and USB over a single cable(since version 1.2). Meaning, in theory, you shouldn't need to plug a separate USB cable into your monitor to get its usb ports working.

Additionally, if you're building with an ASUS mobo(and maybe others?), their UEFI (bios replacement) works better with DP than DVI, as it often stretches the screen beyond the borders making it unusable.

The only difference with DP 1.3 is support for 3d in 4k displays, and support for 8k displays. If your monitor isn't either of these, there is no point in waiting.

The only problem with DP, is it often causes problems after waking up from sleep in Windows.

The reality is, just use what is needed to get the features you want. For most monitors, both DVI-D and DP offer equal experiences.
