Windows Boot Manager

Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.

Possible hard drive failure.

That's why it's essential to keep your data backed up to another drive or to DVDs!

Test the hard drive with the manufacturer's Diagnostic software for DOS which loads from a bootable CD.

You can use Hitachi Drive Fitness Test for most makes of hard drive which are below 3TB capacity.
Download the CD Image (2,720k) from here: http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads/legacy-downloads#DFT
On any computer, create a CD from that file with IMGBurn: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot your laptop from that CD.
When you see a two-item menu, choose "ATA only" and press <Enter>.
The testing software will shortly open depending on the read speed of your optical drive.
Test your laptop's hard drive with the Long/Extended test option as it's more thorough than the short test.

Notice I said "Possible" hard drive failure, it may not be that, but testing it is the only way to find out before you move on to other possible causes.
