hi guys
well its been a busy month with a cpu upgrade... i was lucky enough to get a core i5 3330 for £41,yes just over forty quid, however that was after trading some games towards to cost ... and then i also purchased a sandisk readycache which has speeded up my rig slightly but not as significant as a ssd
however i was also given a radeon HD6790 which is faster than any other card i have ( and these include a GTX550ti and HD5770 ) ... and even though i have the required 500w psu ( ocz stealthstream ) i only have one of the two required 6pin pci-e connectors ...
i know i can use a molex (x2) to 6pin adapter however my question is :
1) if theres not enough power ( which in theory there should be ) what would happen ... would my system simply refuse to start ... or would it throttle the core/memory clocks to allow for the reduced power intake
ive allready tested the HD6790 on my spare pc which uses a inferior C.I.T 650w psu and i also used a molex to 6pin adapter and it worked fine ... i even ran some games ( bf3 and wolfenstein ) and they ran fine .... and lets not forget even though the C.I.T 650w psu sounds more powerful its not as reliable as a OCZ psu .....
finally ive had some guys stating i would be better off using the ASUS GTX550ti instead of the VTX3D HD6790 ... what do you guys think ?
many thanks lads !

Solution
Some versions have two power connectors, because that makes them look more powerful and technically offers more overclocking headroom.

When I say shut down, I mean the PSU exceeding its limits and turning off power to protect it from damage. If that seems too unreliable, run some GPU and CPU benchmarks simultaneously (like prime95 and unigine heaven). While doing that, open up your case and see if the PSU is hot/warm. 40-50 degrees Celsius should be fine.

Besides, even a poor quality 500W PSU can handle something like the GTX 760 so you'll be completely fine.
Your plans about storage space are also good.

Hope this helps :)

thanks eduello
i cant see there being any problems with the HD6790,what makes me mad is theres two versions with one using a single 6pin connector and the other requiring two 6pin ..... however with a 150w tdp a single 6pin should be enough,so why put two on the pcb ?
ive seen a few comparison video,s on the HD6790 and the GTX550ti and its pretty close ... the only downside with the GTX550ti is the lack of stable drivers ... when i recently removed the GTX550ti i was still using the 314.22 release as this was the only version that wouldnt screw up my system
when you say "shut down" would that simply mean the system would shut down to avoid damage to any of the other components .. i ask as ive recently upgraded the cpu ( to a core i5 ) and the last thing i would want is a damaged core i5 !
finally i may have a problem with sata ports being blocked by the HD6790 .... ive managed to locate 3 right angled sata connectors however worst case scenario i could allways disable/remove the sata cable from my second mechanical HDD ... this would leave enough for my ssd, main 1tb sata HDD and my sandisk readycache ..
that said i will probally invest in a sata raid card ( pci-e x1 ) and i can reconnect my secondary sata HDD (250gb ) in conjunction with another 250gb HDD and run them in raid 0 ... this could then be used as a steam libary or game folders ....
thanks man !

UPDATE :
installed the HD6790 without any issues ... ended up using a molex(x2) to 6pin adapter ... when i touch my psu its ice cold so no problems there however my OCZ stealthstream has allways run cold ....
ive just run 3 levels on crysis 2 at very high and high res textures and im getting around 50fps .. not bad .....
i had to disable my storage drive ( only had rubbish on it anyway ) and i shall buy a raid card and add my other 250gb drive and run them in raid 0 ... this wont be for speed but more for convenience .. but can i run 2 x 250gb in raid 0 and also use my sandisk readycache ?
anyway thanks for your input and help ... many many thanks

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can, if you have the needed slots on the motherboard (for the raid 0 controller).
