I have two home offices located at different sites. I will need both servers to be quiet. Any ideas on a build and brand names ? both server will need to talk to each from different location for example i will like to put all my project at site A and sync it with site b and while site B will have another project folder that will sync back to site A. Virtualization will require for one site.

I have a budget of $1500 usd

I will like to have:

Min build requirement

1. 8 gigs ram
2. ssd drives
3.windows 2003 because that is all i can afford for a server license using dfs or something???
4. possible raid adapter
5. quad cpu ... dont know whether to with intel or amd
6. no gaming so i guess standard integrated video is fine
7. the data size will roughly around 25-50gb. over vpn

wondering you guys can give me a server spec

hopefully i can meet my budget reqirement

let me know guys if this is possible

Windows 2003 is not advisable for long-term support. You really need to purchase a later version of Windows Server, or consider a Linux-based server. Now, you didn't mention what you want to do with these servers, so it's even hard to say if you really need a server or what might go in it.

If all you need is to transport data back & forth, then you should just get a NAS device with Remote Sync capabilities. Ones from Synology, QNAP, and others will sync data back & forth pretty easily. They are quiet, and can easily fit within your budget of $1500.

What you are looking at doing is basically replication of virtual machines in each server, through VPN, to off site servers. This can be done quite nicely now with Windows Server 2012 /R2 but not anywhere within your budget. $1,500 with a business-class server and Windows licensing will not be quite enough for one server even, I would imagine, but you're getting really close at least to one server.

I would suggest looking at the ML310e G8 server for a small home office solution. It's smaller size (same as a standard desktop) and very quiet operation. It has quite a few features and a bit of room for expandability and growth if needed. If you value your data and need performance, then you should look into upgrading to a dedicated hardware RAID controller with onboard cache. On top of the server hardware itself you also need to have network equipment in place to build a good site-to-site VPN tunnel between the two locations. You don't want your VPN constantly dropping during the middle of a replication or data transfer off-site causing you problems.

Yes, you can get two QNAP NAS devices with 2-4TB & remote sync them - all within $1500. However, you won't be able to buy two servers (hardware) & license Windows Server for both of them for < $1500.
