Hey everyone,

I am running an FX-6300, Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0, and Hyper 212 Plus, and I'm experiencing some inconsistent results while OC'ing.

Basically, I had a stable OC at 4.7mhz @ 1.46v, temps were good, Prime95 passed no problem. Later on, though, after trying to hit 4.8 and failing, I settle for 4.7, but this time my temps shoot way up past 65c and my prime starts failing even though the settings are the same.

I even went back to 4.6 which I had at much lower voltages and where my temps never went above about 62c, but the temps are shooting way up at 4.6 also, hitting 66c at the highest so far.

Could something have happened while trying to push the cpu to 4.8? Maybe I need to reapply paste and reseat the cooler? Just not sure what's going on.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Solution
While it is possible something got damaged during the attempt (you wouldn't be the first), here's what I suspect is going on from limited experience. Once the CPU overheats, which at 65C+ is likely (hopefully you shut down prime before it overheated too much) it takes a while for the thermal sensors to recalibrate themselves. In my case, it took about a week before my temps started becoming believable (let alone accurate which I've never confirmed). You'll want to keep the computer off during non-use time (I read it helps) and you may want to find an infrared thermometer to confirm temps (they aren't too expensive or borrow one from a neighbor).
Try running at defaults and see if the temps don't still read abnormally high... if so I'd...
