I saved up for a while to buy a Korean monitor with 2560x1440 resolution (got it on sale for $290). I had checked that my motherboard has a dual-link DVI-I output, so I plugged the monitor into the integrated graphics using the dual-link DVI cable. But the resolution drops to a max of 1920x1080 no matter how I tried to change the Intel Graphics control panel.

Is my system just configured wrong, or does my motherboard really not support a higher resolution? I thought that because it has dual-link DVI-I that this would work, and I don't have a separate graphics card nor can I afford one right now (and to make things worse, there are two dead pixels). I don't play games, but just wanted a nicer screen to read from.

Most likely your integrated graphics chip doesn't support a 27" screen and can't manage anything beyond 1920 x 1080.

How you connect it to your PC has no bearing on what resolutions are available, it's all down to how much video memory is available, and since integrated graphics chips have to share system memory, there just isn't enough.

You either need a decent graphics card (minimum 2GB VRAM) or a smaller monitor.

Whilst Windows can stretch the graphics output from your existing integrated GPU to fill a 27" screen, it will have an adverse effect on clarity & sharpness compared to using the monitor's native resolution.
