Hello,

First of all, let me say that I've read all possible threads on this topic but I was not able to find one that describes my exact problem.

I dropped my 1TB WD Elements external hard drive on the ground and now it does not work. Here's what's going on:

- Beeping sound repeatedly
- Hard drive still spinning when plugged
- Data can't be accessed
- On device manager can be seen as "USB Mass storage device". However unable to do anything with it.

I tried it on different PC (even on linux as some other threads suggested) and it did not work. Also it's worth mentioning that there is no clicking sound, only beeping.

I would be grateful if someone could suggest something.

Thank you in advance.

Sounds kinda like its not getting quite enough power. But i don't know why that would only happen after it was dropped.:??:
If you can find a dual power usb cable like this http://usb.brando.com/prod_img/zoom/UCABL008800_02_L.jpg) give that a go. It grabs extra power from a second usb port.

Hey USAFRet, thanks for the answer.

I'm not very informed about this subject so I don't understand the difference between these two.

Could you please tell me if there's a way access my data in it if it's a enclosure damage?

@socialassasin: thanks, i will definitely try if I can find such cable :) the hard drive dropped on the ground by being pulled from the cable so it is possible the cable is damaged too I guess.

Inside the external enclosure is almost certainly just a regular 3.5" drive. The same type drive as in the PC.

I've had good success taking the case apart and removing the drive. Connecting it as an internal drive, or using a USB cable or dock.
Some cases may not be usable after you take them apart....lol

However, if the actual drive is toast...whatever was on it may be gone permanently.
