Computer's lagging after upgrading to win7

Hey, I recently decided to finally go from winxp to win7.
After upgrading, I tried playing my two favorite games (call of duty 2, call of duty 4, both on multiplayer)
on cod2, I barely get 250 fps, sometimes it drops to 180, and before the upgrade when I had xp, I could get to around 300-400fps (although I lock it on 250)

what could be the cause of it ? my guess would be my harddisk, which is 320GB and divided to one 20GB disk, and the rest for another disk.
win7 is installed on the 20GB disk, and it took up almost all of it (about 1-2GB free space available, and nothing else is installed there)
I cant give it more GB cause it would mean i'll have to format my other disk, which has a lot of important content, which i'd rather avoid losing or backing up.

could that be the problem? or am I wrong?

my pc specs are :

c2d e8400 3.0GHZ
gts250 1gb
gigabyte p35
2GB ram ddr2 333mhz

i know the pc is weak, thats cause i only like playing old games, but is it too weak to handle win7 ?

regarding drivers,
right after installing win7, I upgraded to the latest nvidia driver (when I had xp, i used an older driver)

It's safe to assume you're using Windows 7 x84, Am I correct? And also what edition of Windows 7 are you using?

By the looks of it, The RAM seems to be the issue. 333MHz is very slow.
It's enough to run Windows 7 but throwing games into the mix would cause them to slow down.

correct, x84 is what im using.
and are you positive that the ram speed is the issue? will 2gb of 800mhz ram be enough to run games with win7 ?
or should i just go back to winxp, i really dont see any advantage using win7 over xp.

My guess is that it is the RAM speed. 800MHz should be okay.
No point going near XP again. It's support is closing down on the 8th April so you would be prone to every XP security breach. The advantage with Win 7 is that you can get the latest drivers, program updates, and support is going to be around for at least another 3-5 years, Probably longer.
Besides, Do you really need to have 400fps in games? I mean, You must get a crap ton of screen tearing.
180fps is still a lot for gaming. I'm lucky if I hit 100fps.

in old games such as cod2 and cod4, that are using the quake3 engine, locking your fps on 250 gives you a good advantage and a smooth gameplay.
and the fps on the quake3 engine is not the same as in today's engines.
40fps in cod2 will look like 10fps in todays games.
the 180fps im having right now feels like about 20 fps or less.

I just ordered 2GB of RAM 800mhz, I'll post tommorow if it helped.

by the way, I read that using 800mhz ram stick with 333mhz, will result into the 800mhz running at 333mhz.
so im wondering, whats better? adding the 2gb of 800mhz i just bought to my current 2gb, and get 4gb @ 333mhz? or just go with the 2gb 800mhz?

oh wow, ok
I was reading on the internet, and it says that the cpu-z software shows you your memory x0.5
and when I said 333mhz, I was reading out what cpu-z said.
by that logic I should have 2gb of 667mhz sticks installed on my pc.

I opened it and took the sticks out, and they're both labeled as 800mhz
why is it showing 333mhz instead of 400mhz?

The 2gb of 800mhz I ordered havnt arrived yet, but already been paid for.. but on the bright side I just upgraded to 4gb ^^

and also, that means that your theory is probably not correct, as im currently running at - according to cpu-z - 667mhz

any other suggestions why im having these issues states on the topic?
