Any idea why this PSU might have blown?

I built this PC 2 months ago:

  • i5 4670K
  • 2GB MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING
  • Coolermaster GX 650W (RS650-ACAAD3-UK)
  • GByte Z87-HD3 MOBO

  • It crashed and would not turn back on. I tested the PSU and discovered that it had died. I intend to replace it and hopefully claim back on the warranty (if possible?).

Did I make a bad choice in PSU for this spec?

You are unlucky to get the bad PSU, in USA you can call the Coolermaster for the replacement because it will be under warranty. In UK it should be same. And you can use even the 500W good PSU for the gtx770.

Tier 4 - Not Recommend for stressful situations. May not be able to put out full rated power above room temperature, and may slightly fail to meet ATX specs.

There are well made Coolermaster PSU's, unfortunately, yours is not one of them.

    Tier2. Cooler Master Ultimate/UCP
Cooler Master GX 80 Plus 450W
Cooler Master Real Power Pro >greater than 800 watt

Tier3. Cooler Master Real Power Pro <less than 800 watt
    Cooler Master iGreen
Cooler Master Silent (and gold) Pro

If you stick with CoolerMaster, recommend tier1 or 2, settle for tier3, RMA tier4 or 5

Ok, so the original design made by Seventeam was very bad, tier 5 material. The 'newer' design made by Enhance, is almost as bad, dropping 12v to 11.4 when loaded, very loose 3.3v regulations, doesn't make rated wattage, basically fails atx standards at rated load. Yeah, even the 'new and improved' version (b.2011) I'd rate tier4.
