I decided i want to play my ps3 again but 2.5 inch drives for 1-2tb are more expensive. I want to connect a 3.5" sata hard drive to my ps3. if i were to buy a sata to sata plug and leave the 3.5" hanging outside the ps3 would this be a problem and does the RPM matter?

Solution
oh yea. well rpm does matter abit nothing to serious normal ps3 hdd runs at 5200rpm stock speed. if you're going with a 7200rpm it will effect loading times faster but ps3 heats more than normally does but as i said its nothing to serious you wont have any issues.

Well there's a risk of physically damaging the drive if it's outside the casing, but as long as it's just sitting their untouched it will be fine.

The drive may also get too hot if it is powered on for long periods without at least passive cooling of some sort.

Incase you don't know, 2.5" sata drives can be connected internally to the ps3. I want to know if i was to get a sata to sata plug (therefore extending the sata cable's reach to outside the ps3) would i be able to plug in a 3.5" sata drive to it and leave the drive outside my ps3 as it won't fit in internally

Sorry about my previous post, I didn't refresh the page and see the new answers. How would i be able to keep the hard drive cool. would simply leaving it outside the ps3 in open space be enough for it?
