Hi, I am building my own computer and I am looking for any type of DDR3 1600 RAM that works with AMD FX series CPUs (AM3+ socket). I can't seem to find any, if someone could refer me to some compatible RAM then that would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for 2 sticks of 4GB and 2 sticks of 2GB

Solution
That set of ram is on your motherboard QVL list which means it has been tested and works well with your motherboard. The compatible with "xxx" is just a advertising gimmick for those that don't know enough to ask about Ram.
the ram QVL list is on the Motherboard manufactures web page. what motherboard are you planning on using? also it is recommended that you buy your ram in one set not two for compatibility reasons.

Off the top of my head the G.Skill Ares series will work fine with that CPU but like I said before go to the MB manufactures site and look in there Ram QVL list to be sure it will be compatible.

Hi

I assume most recent motherboard for ordinary PC's (eg not servers ) use DDR3 of some sort

Go to Crucial.com enter full details of motherboard and it will make some suggestions

Also most motherboard manufacturers websites have info on suitable & tested RAM modules for the motherboard

I am going to be using a MSI 970A-G46, and the QVL list for MSI only has RAM that is ddr3 800, ddr3 1066, ddr3 1333, ddr3 1333 OC and ddr3 1600 OC. Nothing is said about DDR3 1600 (not OC) which is what I am looking for. And also for G.skill Ares series on Newegg, I don't see anywhere that it says which CPUs it is compatible with

The newegg product page of one of the models (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231461) shows a picture of the package that it comes in, and that says it is only compatible with Intel P55 and P67 platforms

As long as the RAM is DIMM (That's like 98% of all RAM) it will do.

- 4 x DIMM (max 32GB)
- DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600/1866/2133 (OC)

So any DDR3-1600Mhz memory will work. 2133 and 1866 should be OC RAM.

Any AM3+ cpu with a 125watt usage (or lower) and 6-cores or less will work just fine on this board.
And if you are after a budget 1600 ram that will work nicely with it, the go for the Corsair XMS3 1600MHz (2x4gb).
