I belive for a pc to be qualified as a "gamer" pc of any sort, it would require gpu that isn't on-board.

So i would suggest that you pick up a cpu without the on-board support, that is focused more on the cpu performance itself. And grab a cheap gpu instead. Might bump up the price a few bucks, but belive me when i say that its going to be needed. :)

Not the A8. That, I actually consider low-end. For that, you can get a Athlon X4 740 or Athlon X2 370K and GTX 750Ti. (Or if your budget is $500, then get the Radeon R9 270X or R7 260X). The included GPU is worse performing than possibly the GTX 560.

Otherwise, you're good to go.

moved to: systems/new build/ where the thread belongs....

does the $500 count an OS or do you have one already?

while i completely agree that amds new apus are pretty impressive as far as graphics performance (compared with the weak integrated on intel chips) they are a far cry from what is needed for gaming. you might be able to play some rather low end titles at low levels or at low resolution but thats about it.

for a bit over $500 i would go with a fx-6300 and a seperate video card such as a 270x or gtx650 level card. if you watch prices and buy on sale you can get half decent framerates and can even play some of the newest releases on medium. keep in mind that budget does not include an os so either you need to have one already or need to raise your budget.

I already currently own a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. So the $500 is for everything but the OS.

Looked at some prices now, and will support your suggestion.
an fx-6300 and a Gtx650 would be the optimal way to go at that price point.

Thanks! I think I'll end up buying the fx-6300 and Gtx650.

i would probably go with something along the lines of:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3id1X

keep in mind that i tried to pick some parts which were on sale while still keeping within respectable brands. please see notes below. yes its over budget but again see below for reasons

*good buy on ram right now...
*the case drops $10 sometimes but its pretty good for a low end case. other cases are kind of iffy for quality at that price.
*xfx psu would be better than corsair cx series. the cx series has a capacitor in there well known for blowing up if the psu gets pushed too hard. its a bit more money but thats why i picked it. you could go with a cx500m to save cash but just realize that its a chance you take and i wouldnt go trying to upgrade to sli or anything too crazy on it.
*650ti isnt a bad card however if you could push your budget to a 270x (perhaps nab one one sale for $160 when they go on sale) you will get better performance. if you buy other parts which are on sale you might be able to get everything for like $560ish.
*gave you a 970 chipset mobo which is overclockable. not great for it but its doable. to do that you would need to buy a cpu heatsink though (the stock cooler is not for overclocking)
*8gb of ram is much better than the 4 you wanted.
*if you watch ebay or newegg close you might be able to nab a fx-8350 for $135 which would be ideal. sure its more money but its also going to be better in the long run.
*gave you a 1tb drive for like $5 more
