Apple ear-buds with mic not working

The Apple earbuds with a mic attached are not being recognized by my computer as being plugged in. There is also another object called Line in that says it is not plugged in as well. Any tips for figuring out how to get these to work?

What kind of computer/sound card do you have?
The Apple earbuds with mic will only work properly with jacks that are designed both input and output (MacBook headphone ports/most smartphone headphone ports.)
Does your computer recognize any other device while you plug it in?
