Kaveri APU vs Haswell I3/I5

I'm building a computer for someone and they were looking at one of the two Kaveri APU's. This person is not a gamer and they will never game so leave that out of it. The computer will be used for work only. I advised the person that it would be better to go with an I3 or spend a little more and get an I5. I told them that AMD cpu's and APU's are well behind Intel in terms of CPU core performance. I also told them that APU's need faster ram because the integrated graphics has to use the computer RAM. So my question is this. What would be better for strictly work computer? Also how much ground has AMD made up since the Bulldozer disaster and are they still atleast a generation or two behind Intel. I just can't see getting an APU when for around the same price (an I3) or for a little more (an ) I5 will easily out perform it.

The A10s and Haswell i3s are about the same in overall cpu performance, while the A10's graphics are considerably stronger than any of Intel's. The i5 is far stronger than the A10s and i3s if he can afford one.

For MS Office, email and internet only kinda work, I would go with the AMD.

Either one will be more then enough power, but you will save money on the AMD, and the built in GPU is just nice to have for the savings.

You're right.
APUs, although cheap, are mostly not better at computing than Intel CPUs.
AMD CPUs on the other hand (*NOT APUs) are pretty good. Something like the FX-8350, if overclocked properly with a decent cooler, *sometimes, can do as good as an Intel i5.
But if it's strictly computing, Intel will win 9/10.

Good luck!
