I just built my first pc about a month ago with an i7 4770k ND a gtx 780 SC, it's a great card and does exactly what I want a $500 video card to do at 1080p in MOST cases. I received the holiday game bundle with my card, but I must say I'm a little disappointed with assassin's creed 4 's performance. I only gets about 40 fps average, meaning the card is already at its limit for a last Gen title. Should I upgrade to a 780 ti? Or simply sli a 780, or option c, suck it up and wait for the 800 series that still has yet to be announced although rumors speculated they would be released in Q1 of this year. Here's the thing Q1 is over! Where's the 800 series?! I hate waiting. I've been waiting for months just for a release date. It's like a unicorn I swear.
At GDC, nvidia was only talking about Pascal in 2016 (which sounds epic!). But to wrap it up, I'll upgrade before 2016, eventually I want 1440p or greater, and my card now might now cut it. What is everybody's thoughts?

A 770 will play current gen titles on Ultra at 1080p, the 780 will give you better FPS, but for 1080 it's overkill. Since you are thinking about 1440p, I think the 780 is probably a good solution for it. Maybe when the 800 series comes out, you can sell your 780 and get at least an 880 or whatever, then you'll be perfectly set up for 1440p I'm thinking.
