Can I plug in a 4-pin fan connect into a 3 pin socket?

I have a few 4-pin fan connectors, but only 1 available 4 pin socket, the rest are 3 pin. If i plug in a 4pin fan connector to a 3 pin socket, will the fan still work but just spin at the highest RPMs?

you can get an adapter. search 4 pin 3 pin molex adapter

I read some answers on google, they said you can plug it into the 3 pin socket but you lose the PWM ability for variable speed.

They didnt say anything about an adapter.

well i know they exist. if you're fine without the pwm control then go for it. otherwise just get the adapter, they're only a few bucks.
