Is my CPU overheating?

I just got a AMD FX 8350 and the box was slightly smashed when I recieved it, I am using the stock cooler for it right now and it idles at around 50c, I want to know if that is high for a idle temp or not, because if it is I am going to send this one back for a replacement. other than the high idles the cpu seems to function fine.

Try doing it this way: Add pea/dot sized drop on the Cpu (DO NOT PAINT THE WHOLE CPU THE HEATSINK WILL DO IT ITSELF) Re-attach the cooler make sure its nice and tight power it up and see the temps.

Shouldn't the stock cooler be able to keep it at a decent idle temp though?

Depends what monitoring software shows you that temperature. If it's HWMonitor and that's shown under Package, or Speccy software, then it's perfectly ok for the stock cooler. If that temp is what Aida64 or BIOS shows on CPU, then it's hot.

You have to make sure you have placed the cooler properly on the CPU and it has good contact with it. A smashed box doesn't mean anything to be honest. If anything the only thing that could be damaged would be the heatsink but you would've seen the damage when installing it.

Although stock coolers are pretty bad it should still keep your CPU cooler than than on idle.

The case has very good airflow despite the bad cable management, I'm using speedfan to tell me the temps, and the thermal paste I put a even layer on the heatsink itself.

Should I put any on the heatsink, or just the cpu?

Lol thanks, and that helped pretty good, now I don't have to listen to that darn fan rattling at 4.5k rpm, it seems to sit at 39-40c, which I still think is high but is much better than 50+. The main reason I made this thread was to make sure there wasn't something wrong with the cpu before I invested in a water cooler. I appreciate your help man, it seems to have fixed the issue until I get my water cooler.

Thank you for the reassurance, I needed it, the past week I owned this cpu I've been afraid it was damaged or something since the box was smashed during shipping. The whole time while it was running around 50c the stock cooler was running around 4,5k RPM which was very loud and annoying which made me think even more that it was damaged, turns out it was just the thermal paste and reapplying got me down to the 40c, hopefully when I get my water cooler, which I just ordered the corsair h55, I will get in the low to mid 30s for idle temp
