360 wired controlled without driver?

I have an original 360 wired controller for my PC. In the manual it says "To use the controller, you must first install the driver.". I use it without the driver that came with it and it works fine. Why does it say the driver is needed?
Could using the controller without the driver cause problems in the long run(hardware damage, file corruption etc.)?
BTW, my OS is Windows 7.

Windows 7 has the driver to support Xbox 360 controllers.
Windows xp does not and requires a driver to be installed.

There is nothing wrong at all.
when you first connected the device, windows 7 should of searched for it and installed the xbox 360 controller driver by it`s self.

It will not damage your system.
