Windows 7 Unidentified Network on Ethernet

A while back my computer all of a sudden lost network access and thought my home network was some unidentified public network that it could not connect to. It was weird because everything else connected on wired was working fine. My computer was hooked to a switch so I thought I would try plugging it in directly to the router. That didn't work. I don't think the cable is faulty because we tested it on our cable tester and all of the wires had continuity.

I tried everything from changing the IP address and reinstalling the ethernet driver to mixing up the ports on the router and switch and trying the connection on another computer (which worked) and I'm convinced that it is a problem with windows or my hardware. I haven't reformatted yet as this would be my last last resort.

Eventually I fixed the problem by unplugging the router and switch then plugging them back in. The problem came back about a week later so we did this again and it worked. But now, about another week later, it has come back to haunt me and restarting the network only works for a few minutes or does not work at all. Does anyone know why this could be happening?

Okay then, I've done more research and I'm going to try to upgrade the firmware on the router, since all of the other computers except mine are pretty old. Not sure this will do anything to help but I guess it's worth a shot.

UPDATE: If the upgrade has done anything then my computer will work from now on instead of timing out, but right now it's working.

Alright, the problem is back, AND I've just got a blue screen. This is weird. I've just started in safe mode with networking and the ehternet seems to work. What does this mean I should do?
