So I currently have an MSI GTX 560 TI 448 Twinfrozriii but I still had my old graphics card laying around, 8600GT, I think the make was Xvision or something like that.

Anyways, long story short, I recently tried to fit a cpu heatsink/fan onto my 8600 and for some reason I'd lose display on my PC a few seconds after booting windows ( 7 ). However I just found the card again today but without the CPU heatsink on it and decided to plug it in for the heck of it. Suprisingly, it worked.

Basically, I lost the fan while finding ways to attach the heatsink and now it's fanless but still has it's stock heatsink but with a very small thick heatsink block in the middle where the fan was.

I did some testing with it for the heck of it and got some odd results...

On 3DMark 2000, my 560TI gets 18000-20000 but this card gets 11000-12000. The card has been underclocked, with the memory clock down to roughly 300mhz and the core clock to somewhere around 150.

BUT................

In sculptris ( Modelling program ), I specifically remember trying to push my 560 to the limit and could only ever get around 100,000 triangles/polygons, maybe 200,000 if lucky before the program started to freeze constantly and crash.

I just tried sculptris with the 8600 GT and I kept going and going. I got it up to a few thousand over 1,000,000 triangles and it never crashed or froze... Sure it was sitting at 15-23FPS but it never crashed.

How is this possible? Might be dumb me asking but is the 8600GT a developer card or something? O.o?

Might be it. But are you sure you are using 8600GT, it is a very old card and by the things you wrote it seems like it is equal to gtx 560 Ti. And removing the heat sink and removing the fan the performance should decrease. See this link for comparison: http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=463&gid2=1...

It is the 8600GT, one of the sticker lables on the bottom of the card had info, altho the one I have is 512MB DDR2. I tested a few games and it runs alot worse than the 560 TI but I still don't understand how it surpassed the 560 TI in sculptris by the ammount it did.

Then it might be right. Although I haven't use the 8600GT myself but it may have been made for developing. Nowadays most of the cards are built for gaming except there nvidia's quadro and texla which were build for developing.

7 years is quite a long time my friend. I am surprised it ran that long. Time for a new card.
