My 3 year old WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD makes very low rattling kind of noise only when it is accessed.
Is this normal ?
Also it takes complete 30seconds to Windows explorer to show from pressing start button of PC.Is this also normal to take this much time to start windows 7 ?

Should I be worried and be expecting HDD failure anytime?

Solution
30 seconds is about right.
But a rattling noise coming from the drive may not be.
The drive will shake a bit when accessed, and a loose mount might accentuate that.
Regardless, go to the WD web site and download their drive diagnostic app. I think it is called data lifeguard.
If the drive is still under warranty, I might replace it regardless.

Better yet, use a SSD for the windows drive. It makes a HUGE difference.

I am pretty sure that HDD is tightly mounted by 4 screws.Diagnosing the hdd seems appropriate.

Seems like I have to say goodbye to win 7 and use win 8.1 which is installed on ssd.

Yes the mounting position has rubber pads to reduce noise.
Quick test stated that the drive has no errors.
Now i am going to perform extended test and see what does it says

Well the HDD also passed Extended Test and the strange thing was that during 2 hour of testing the HDD didnt make any weird noise though it was under 100% load.

So does this means the sound is produced due to its Design Structure and there is nothing to worry about?
