Should I buy a new motherboard for FX-83xx?

Hi all,

I just bought a second 7870 GHz for my build, but I'm afraid that my FX-6300 won't be up to the task. I am thinking about upgrading to the FX-83xx but I also don't know if I should keep the same motherboard or not.

Current specs:
FX-6300 @ 4.4GHz
7870 GHz CF
ASRock 970 EXTREME4

The thing that scares me about my current motherboard is that it is running a 4+1 power phase and the 83xx would be better suited to an 8+2 board. Should I upgrade my CPU, and if so, would a 990 motherboard be better?

Solution
Why don't you try out your 7870cf with your current FX-6300?

You can then better assess the need for a cpu change.

If you are looking at a motherboard change as well as a cpu change, I suggest you look at some sort of an Intel quad.

Hi i owned the ASRock 970 EXTREME3 motherboard and had the same thoughts about upgrading.
I think the only thing that your old board will limit you on is overclocking, the board should support the FX-83xx, some boards need a bios update to do so!
but it should run :)

This is what I'm going to do for now. I don't think I really want an Intel right now, it's surely better but a 4670k is still quite a bit more expensive than a 8320 right now. I like overclocking too so I'd definitely want a K Intel.
