High CPU Temperature on New System

Hi, there..
I just put together a new system with some spare parts.
But, the MB (GA-P43-ES3G) & CPU (Q9450) are from ebay.
I put my Corsair H80 (brand new that I had) on it and booted yesterday.

I found that the CPU temp was pretty high. around 60c in idle.
So, I ran Prime and it failed with a message saying hardware failure.
I ran Ortho test and it failed with the same message.
I finally ran system stability test of Everest only to find out..
the CPU temp is around 60c when idle and around 95-100c in full load. What..?
I thought it was very high.
What's even more strange is that the MB temp is 45c in idle and 85 in full load.

It's hard for me to imagine it's the CPU that causes this high temperature. (Isn't is too high?)
So, I suspected it is either the motherboard or the cooler.
The motherboard.. I bought from a Chinese seller (with a good feedback) and
it was a factory refurbished one and the cooler, I bought it two years ago brand new
from Amazon and kept in my possession. However.. I need to mention this..
When I assembled the cooler on the board, I could not firmly tightened the back bracket
to the board and to the front bracket. I tighten it as much as I can but it just won't give me
that tight feeling. Either the screw was too short or the board was too thin. I don't know..
but It was little too loose. (Should I try a thin washer? Need your opinion here)
I don't know what's the cause of it but that's what I observed.

So, I suspect two things. It's the cooler. The Corsair H80 does't provide the tight sealing
between the cooler and the CPU. Maybe I need a replacement or I need to put more Arctic Silver 5
or a little washer that will fill the gap. But why so high MB temp?
Or, it is the factory refurbished MB that cause this high temperature. So, I need to ask a refund.
Maybe, both.

I have build several systems for myself and family and had no problem using new quality parts.
Now, I have no idea when these kind of problems come in my way so I ask your help.
What do you guys think is the cause of this high temperature and what should I do?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time and God bless you.

CPU: Q9450 (ebay)
MB: GA-P43-ES3G (ebay)
Cooler: Corsair H80 (new)
RAM: Dell brand DDR2 (4 x 2GB) - works
PSU: Corsair CX430M (brand new) - works

Solution
I think you need to return the H80.
My reading shows that it does not support lga775 sockets.

The purpose of thermal paste is to fill in microscopic pits in the well fitting mating surfaces. Too much will act as an insulator.

Your Q9450 is a relatively hot cpu.
But a simple tower type cooler with a lga775 mount should do the job.

Thanks guys.. I didn't think the paste would help. I know that much.^^ Anyway, the voltage is 1.22v and I set all to default. The box says H80 support LGA775 though. Yeah, I learned Q9450 has 95W. But shouldn't it pass the torture test with proper cooling? Is 55c in idle and 100c in full load just to high? I'm asking. I will try the washer and if it doesn't work I guess I will call Corsair.

Yeah that's high. My CPU has a 220W TDP and it doesn't go that high. H80 should keep that under wraps. Idle you should be seeing about 30's and 40 max. As for the MOBO that is pretty high too. You have proper fans pushing air through the case? Also depends on where the sensor is. If it's right beside the CPU socket and in the meantime that's cooking then it will show high temps

I got it.. It was the cooler. I resat the cooler with washer but no matter what I did I couldn't get that thing cooled enough. It was still hitting 100c under load. So, I just went to local Fry's and grabbed the famous CM Hyper 212 EVO and it did not disappointed me. The temp is now 29-44 idle and 47-57 under load. The mobo sent down as well (26/37). And it is "very" quiet. So I am happy now.. Anyway, what would be a nice torture test program for quad core. Prime95 & TOAST only test single core. I have to run 4 instances of that. Anyway, thank you very much for your input guys.. Thank you..

For the temperature wise, the board is great. Like you mentioned, it must be the CPU affected the motherboard. It is now 26 in idle 37 in full load. So I feel good about that. But I have another issue. I am going to use a SSD for the boot drive and I want to be sure the new board has AHCI mode available. But some how when I change the setting from IDE to AHCI, the new board does not recognize the new SATA HDD (WD Red). Currently I am moving data from the SSD. Maybe it is because it's a HDD. I don't know. I sent an email to Gigabyte tech support. So hopefully they have an answer. But other than that the board is great. Thank you vey much for your answers. Appreciated!

Good to hear that must be a relief. Ahhh. That could be because windows was already installed in IDE mode. Do you have the Windows disk? Do a fresh install on the ssd in AHCI mode. Your HDD should manage being in AHCI mode too. Before you do that just see what Gigabyte says and have that second opinion before wiping all your stuff.

You must heard my great sigh of relief. ^^ Yes, it saved me a lot of trouble. Thank God.. My problem with AHCI mode is I don't think is in Windows Installation because it is the BIOS that could not detect the HDD. I checked the BIOS and it detected my DVD drive which has IDE connector but not the HDD which has SATA connector. It could be a minor setting that could be changed easily, I don't know. Hope I can make it going. I want to finish this project asap. I will update how it goes. Thank you, man..!

Hey, I got it.. The drive was listed under SCSI drive for some reason instead of IDE. I found it under boot drive section and was able to install the OS. It's running pretty fast now and it's quiet and cool at the same time.. I feel really good. I installed the Windows and made sure the Device Manage recognized the SATA AHCI and I am sure when I put the SSD, I will be able to take advantage of the TRIM function. So I am all set. Thank you very much for your input. You are awesome, bro.. Thank you and I bless you in the name of my God! ^^
