Hello everyone,

I recently bought myself some new components for my rig :
- a new CPU (Intel Core i5-4400 @ 3.10GHz)
- a new mobo (Asus B85M-G)
- a new GPU (GeForce GTX 650)

I run Windows 7 Ultimate.

Everything went smoothly until two weeks ago. Now, whenever I run a game (more specifically, WoW, SWTOR or Diablo III), my ping skyrockets, making the game unplayable and whenever I quit, the network resumes its normal speed.

To sum up my situation, I use a US Robotics USB Wireless adapter for networking purposes. I live in a shared house with two mates. None of them own a rig capable of supporting games. They use outdated laptops for their work.
Plus, the router is downstairs. All this makes it quite difficult to test if my problem happens to them as well, or to check said games on another CPU.

I could take the time to set my computer downstairs just to test the network with a cable, but I haven't had the opportunity yet.

Here is a list of things I've attempted, as exhaustive as my memory allows :

- First thing I tried was to download something to see if it was a network problem. When I'm not running a game, download speed is up to 2mo/s. When a game is on, it decreases dramatically, around 100ko/s.
- Tried to reboot the router several times, to no avail.
- Checked if the router's firmware is up to date. Apparently it is automatically updated.
- Checked my CPU for malwares through utilities like CCleaner, RogueKiller.
- Ran scans with the two antiviruses i own, Avast and Avira (I installed Avira after my ping problem happened, believing perhaps there was something that Avast could be missing).
- Looked for GPU driver's update, through GeForce Experience.
- Tried disabling antiviruses and firewall.
- Ran a ping check on the console command. Whenever I'm not running a game, the average response is between 1 and 3 ms and it sometimes peaks at 7-8 ms. I don't know if it is supposed to peak, but I guess it is normal through a wireless connection.
Whenever I'm playing a game, it's a bit slower, nothing unusual, except from the fact that sometimes I get a "request timed out".

So, all in all, I'm assuming it is not really a network problem.
I don't remember what I was doing when the problem first happened, but I wasn't doing any major changes / updates or anything, to my recollection.

Has somebody encountered the same problem?
What could it be?

I thank you all in advance for your answers / tips / tricks / miracles.

J.

Since then, I've been able to play WoW on Saturday evening, with no apparent problem. The ping was not optimal, but it was seamless. I cannot tell what changed on that evening. Couldn't even move in SWTOR though.

I've tried to reset my router to factory settings on Sunday. Didn't change a thing.

Could it be related to ports being somewhat blocked? I've tried to lower the router's firewall settings to minimum, and I checked the exceptions on my Windows Firewall. That hasn't solved anything.

But, still?
