Can i play a steam game with a non-steam user

i would like to play ARMA II Combined operation's with a friend who has the steam version should i need to buy the steam version or can i play with him with a disk copy witch i got online not via steam?

Of course you can play together as long as you join the same server.Just make sure one of you gives the port/ip of the server which you both want to join

Thanks i was cheking bcause i know that som steam gams cannot play with normal non steam users and didnt want to spend £17 on nothing
