Ok .. hi Everybody :)
Blue Lights running across my Screen ! :p
I'm in Trouble with my Desktop - ASUS A7V 400_MX .
Running Windows XP ( SP3 )
I'm not sure what i done to it !! ?.
But it was working fine up till this morning .. I did a few things today
1. I ran DISC CLEANUP .. deleted and cleared a few files . .. One option i used which i never did before was REMOVE OLD SYSTEM FILES .. i think the Computer was updated from Windows 98 or 2000 .
2. I was saving a File to the A: Drive ( remember them ?? :) ) . and i put in a 3.5" Floppy 1.44MB .. I had a Quick look to see what was on there ! - and it was an ___.exe File (com5232aahpro_r108.exe)( to Flash my Aopen COM 5232/AAH Pro cd/dvd rom .. ) I know .. I know !! . (NOW ) but i stupidely ran this File !! - i only remembered after I ran it - what it was ...Anyway - I no longer have the AOpen Com5232 - it gave up the ghost a few months back :( . but i have a NEC ND-3500AG :) :) ..
Now i was worried that i might have FLASHED the NEC with the Aopen software !!! - So i went to check - Ran DISCInfo - Rev was at 2.16 i think this is what it was !!
could the CD/DVD flash have flached the C Drive ..
The Computer hung while in the A Drive - I had to turn off via the Power Button ,,

And Now i'm stuck !

What has caused my Computer to Stop Working ??
Any Ideas Anybody
Regards,
Peter D

Hi Notherdude :)

Ya its Old ! but sure, so am I !! .
Ok .. I'll Expaine a bit better -
My Desktop would not BOOT UP - it would get as far as the XP "Splash Screen" with the "running blue lights" you Know, like the Loading symbol ---[]-------- But that is as far as She went .:(
I tried - Safe mood, Use Last Known Good Configuration , But neither would work --so i could not do- a System Restore .

.. Here is what i did -

1. Switched of ( forced Stut-down ) restarted - hit the power button while holding down "delete" - got into BIOS
2. changed the settings to boot to - floppy 1st - DVD 2nd - HDD 3rd ...
Rebooted to A: Drive, to My Bootable Windows XP ( 11 Dec 2013) . that got me into DOS !-- I searched for boot.ini - could not find it !!
3. Put XP (SP3) disk into DVD Drive .
4. Re-booted !
5. went to Recovery Console. did a Bootcfg /Rebuild..
6. Not Quite Sure ;( what i did next !)! - But i may have also have ran Fixboot [c:]:
ANYWAY !!
The Computer is Booting up now - But have a few PROBLEMS !!!
A, Half my Desktop Icons are missing
B, Files that were on my Desktop have gone Missing
C, My Bottom Taskbar is missing my Outlook Express icon
D, Outlook Express is missing ALL my e-mails except ones from today
Maybe other Problems - I havent decovered Yet !!

I tried a System Restore - But no Joy ..
Still as A, B, C ,.....Above !!

HELP !! :(

Peter D

Your basic cluster duck then :) sorry but if I had the machine in front of me I might be able to get to the bottom of it but diagnosing from a distance is difficult. If it was me I'd salvage any files I could and reinstall windows. You could try a registry scan. Google registry scan windows Xp.and by registry scan I mean the built in windows reg scan, not a third party scanner.

Hi notherdude ..
Thanks for your Reply ..
I've only ever worked with the Registory "by hand" - i.e. Regedit
I did a bit of Googleing and foung reference to “scanregw.exe” and "reg.exe"
But please explain what you mean by - " try a registry scan" & " I mean the built in windows reg scan" ??
I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP3) - {version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_3_qfe.130704-0421 : Service Pack 3) }

I have started to salvage my files to an External HDD -

And will reinstall Windows XP or maybe windows 7, 8, 8.1
But I really liked XP - cant believe the April 8 KILL !! :(

If you think a Registery Scan would be helpfull , could you please describe how I might go about it ??

do you think i would be beneficial to restore lost clusters to Files - or would I be waisting my Time ?/

Again thanks for you Help :)

Best Regards,
Peter D .

If 'system restore' failed then a registry scan probably won't help but I have been off XP for so long I'm a bit lost. Not even sure if the old scanreg works on XP or if I am remembering that from Windows 95! Sorry. You probably need a real Windows expert and I'm just a good amateur.

You could sure try a scanning the hard drive. From Microsoft:
"Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

Note The Check disk options dialog box appears.
Use one of the following procedures:
To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
2683283Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check."

BUT! I would salvage all important files first before you run chkdsk, just in case.

I sure would reinstall Windows. Windows 7 works well on old machines. With XP support going away I don't think I'd press my luck continuing with it on an internet machine.
