Lag spikes at regular intervals

Yesterday I started having problems playing online with massive lag spikes seemingly occurring at regular intervals. The day before everything was working fine after a fresh format.

The only thing that has changed is a firmware update on my wifi router in my attempt to fix the Windows 8.1 wifi limited connectivity problem that everyone has.

Did some research online and decided to ping my router and then ISP to determine where the loss is coming from. Pinging my router with -t shows a "request timed out" every 30 or so seconds. In between those, the times are good (1ms nearly every time), then all of a sudden timed out.

I've tried changing the wifi channel, rebooting my router, reinstalling wifi card drivers, disabling QoS, changing to 802.11b only.

I'm using a D-Link N300 router with a Billion 7800n modem, and a TP-link TL-WN722N usb wifi adapter.

The strangest thing is another pc in my house on the same wifi connection is having no problems at all.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? I'm about to try formatting again.

Are both wireless device located in the same place? There could be regular interference in the area where your problematic device is.

Try moving the problematic device to where the healthy PC is, or vice-versa and see if you can spot any patterns

Well I tried attaching my wifi usb adapter to my laptop and carrying it out next to the router, and it still showed the regular timeouts. I removed the dongle and connected via the laptops internal wifi and pinging the router ran without timeouts for 10mins. I was almost certain the usb dongle was to blame since I installed a new wifi pci card and the ping timeouts disappeared, games were running fine. Aggravatingly I had already formatted my pc.

Then today, it started doing it again though less frequently. Now, the last thing I did before this was to reset my router to factory default (because I was having issues with my torrent client using up all my bandwidth even when not downloading). My other issue got fixed and my download speeds were at max again, but now I'm getting these annoying intermittent timeouts again. Not sure if it's related.

One thing I noticed this time was that the timeouts weren't happening every 30 seconds anymore, more like a few minutes and not regular like before either.

Another thing to note, the wifi limited connectivity bug of win8.1 seems to have gone away though I wonder if it was related to the really bad timeouts I was getting before. Now my signal strength remains excellent and I don't get internet dropouts.

This really is frustrating since the problem doesn't appear to follow any logic. A family member in the next room playing the same game has no issues at all, perfect latency, and my laptop too. My pc has now been fresh formatted, and the router reset to factory. I'm even using a different wifi card! It defies belief.

If it matters, the game we're trying to play is Diablo 3 and I've also submitted a support ticket which hasn't been answered yet.
