I'm in the market for a new ultraportable and I need to decide between an i5/4gb and i7/8gb. My understanding, at least for a desktop, is that the latter is really only necessary for graphic intensive work and gaming, neither of which do I do, and I don't want to spend for the upcharge if unnecessary. Is this also true for laptops?

Solution
yes, but do keep in mind that the i5(m,q,u) series in laptops are all dual cores, with the u series being low voltage ones which are extremely effecient but not as strong as there peers. the i5 however does have 4 threads so it will function as a 'weaker'quad core. the i7 has 4 cores with the exception being the i7 46xx series. those 4 cores can function as 8 threads for octa core performance. the 8gb is recommended by most but only used with heavy mulitasking/gaming/video editing/photo editing.

So it sounds like my conclusion is correct then if I'm understanding properly. The models I'm looking at don't allow for mix-n-match (i5 w/8GB for example) so it's either or.

@ _Vas So which i5 series is preferable then? I'm not sure I really understand "the u series being low voltage ones which are extremely efficient but not as strong as their peers."

4gb and an i5 would suffice. the u series use less energy.
