Hey guys,

Just built a new computer and the system wont go past the logon.

Specs:

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77
16GB Corsair dominator (1600MHZ)
Intel i7 3770K (with intel HD 4000 graphics)
Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 GHZ edition

I have tried basically everything but hoping i haven't so i can actually fix this.

what i have done:

Tried to install latest drivers for the graphics card from both AMD and Gigabyte but no luck

disabled Lucid virtu in the BIOS and made the PCI lane the primary graphics

uninstalled the intel graphics driver

updated the intel graphics driver - when i tried to update this it came up with "could not find device or is not enabled in the BIOS" so i'm not sure?

when i installed the mother board drivers it would not install the SATA controller as "file could not be found" and there isnt any proper ones on asus that i could find. could this be a problem for the graphics?

i am able to run windows directly through the motherboard graphics and do things but the graphics card only comes up as "microsoft basic display adaptor" and the AMD auto detect will not find the graphics card....

when i boot into safe mode it will work through the PCI graphics and i tried to update the AMD auto detect app it told me it was the Radeon R9 series and tried to download it for me, but catalyst will not work in safe mode

i have tried alot of things but they are not working for me :/ been trying for over a week now to get it going

can anyone shed some light on this situation?

Thanks guys

If you leave the 7970 out and connect your monitor to the I/O GPU connection, does that work? Do you have to connect it in Bios?

As far as I know, a 7970 is also a R9 280X. So the drivers should be the same. And I'd expect the Intel integrated graphics would also work at the same time anyway - off the I/O connection.

The motherboard should've already been loaded with at least older drivers . They'd need that to test the board. Are all the components new? Is the PSU fully plugged in - to mobo at least?

Yes the computer works perfect without the graphics card. if i don't plug it in it runs through the HDMI port on the I/O and runs fine, this how ever labels the PCI graphics card as a "microsoft basic display adaptor" where as if i boot with the graphics card it shows as the HD 7970 but will crash if i try to install the beta drivers

so to make it more understandable - i can boot and 50% of the time it will blank after logon. the other 50% it will work but the screen is very very buggy and if i click something, 50% of the time it will blank to the colour of the theme

i almost got the newest beta drivers installed but it crashed again so i gave up after the 14th time.

ah yeah that makes sense... and yes all completely new components and all plugs are defiantly in propperly

i basically think the problem is either

windows 8.1 doesn't like my GPU

the graphics drivers don't work properly

or the card could be faulty

***i should also note this is a client build which the client had lost the driver installation disc before he came to me, but the card was still in the anti-static bag**
